Works
Open World (2025)
At the Pontevedra Biennial, Yarema Malashchuk and Roman Khimei present a piece co-produced in collaboration with the 36th Ljubljana Biennial of Graphic Arts. It is an audiovisual work that tells the symbolic return of a Ukrainian boy to his neighbourhood, in a town near the front line, destroyed by Russia’s constant bombing. He now lives with his family in exile and visits his old neighbourhood thanks to the BAD-2 robot dog. Like a scene from a video game, the boy uses the robot to virtually explore familiar streets and reconnect with neighbours and friends whose families decided to stay behind. The piece reflects on the rise of robot weapons in warfare and how technology can become a channel for emotional and spatial reconnection, highlighting the resilience of communities separated by war.
