Works
Inch'allah (2015)
In this work, Aboubacar Traoré deals with jihadist indoctrination from a similar perspective to that of youths who are attracted to extremism. The series, whose title means 'God willing' in Arabic, shows people involved in actions suggesting an ideological transformation, all in a desert landscape. In one image, a man dressed in a white tunic appears on a luxury motorbike, while, in another shot, three young men meet another person who greets them from the top of a rock. In other works, people are seen around a motorbike or a man is shown lifting a rock to hit someone who is crouching down. A common element in all images is the use of dark helmets, without visors, symbolising the brainwashing of religious fundamentalist groups. This series was presented at Bamako Encounters, the African biennial of photography, where Traoré received the International Prize of the International Organisation of La Francophonie.
