Pobo afgano, trincheiras e campo de tiro. Salcedo (Afghan people, trenches and firing range. Salcedo, 2022-2024)
Damian Ucieda's project is about a local conflict in Galicia, where local communities opposed the expansion of a military base designed to train in urban combat, and linked to the war in Afghanistan. Locals fought to recover their land and protect their heritage, which reflects a defence of the territory against militarisation. This conflict highlights the environmental impact of military activities, while the resistance of local people illustrates a social struggle for preserving their natural resources. Through this work, Ucieda also denounces the effects of violence and militarisation on the environment, connecting the defence of the land with a criticism of the costs of war. Thus, his work not only records a social struggle, but also reflects on the ecological and ethical implications of war.
