At the Pontevedra Biennial, Denilson Baniwa presents four works posing a reflection on the symbiotic relationships among humans, animals and nature, and the fragility of this natural balance that has been seriously altered by colonialism and ecological exploitation. These four pieces provide an in-depth look at Amazonian resistance and focus on the signals that animals, the ‘critters’, send out to set the rhythm of weather and nature. The sapo-aru that sings before it gets cold, the lizard that announces the hot weather and the centipede that signals the beginning of the rain: in these pieces, Baniwa invites us to think about how indigenous peoples have understood and experienced the relationship with their natural environment for centuries. Through these works, the artist reflects on the interconnection between all forms of life and dialogues with contemporary discourses of post-humanism, questioning anthropocentrism and proposing a new way of living on and coexisting with the planet.
