Zehra Doğan

Zehra Doğan (1989, Diyarbakir, Turkey) is a Kurdish artist and journalist who works from her experience in a context of violence, repression and conflict. As a journalist, she has covered topics such as the war in Syria and Iraq, the situation of Yezidi women and the conflicts in the Kurdish regions of Turkey, for which she received several awards, including the Jury's special award at the Musa Anter Awards for Kurdish journalism. In 2012, she co-founded JINHA, the first all-women news agency, which was closed in 2016 by the Turkish Government. Her artwork and her journalistic activity are inseparable, both characterised by a critical view of reality and a constant struggle for justice and survival in the face of repression. Her work has been shaped by her political activism and, as a consequence, she has suffered prison sentences, periods during which she continued to produce art under extreme conditions. Through her practice, Doğan explores the limits of moral and physical resistance, using art as a tool to fight for justice.
