Hans Haacke (1936, Cologne, Germany) is a key figure in conceptual art. Acknowledged as a pioneer and leading exponent of institutional critique, in the 1960s Haacke was a central figure in reflecting on the structures that shape the art world and their connection with power interests. His work questions the relationships between art, power and institutions, drawing on disciplines outside art, such as sociology and economics, and incorporating his records, reports, surveys and other public access materials into his artistic process to denounce political and economic manipulation, corporate corruption and social injustices.
