Artists
Manal AlDowayan (1973, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia) is an artist who sensitively addresses the cultural metamorphosis that Saudi Arabia is undergoing, especially with regard to women's status. Her work, which combines both personal and political issues, challenges sexist customs and questions traditions, collective memory and women's representation. Through different media, such as photography, audio, sculpture and collaborative actions, AlDowayan offers a critical look at the contradictions of Saudi society: the public versus the private sphere, tradition versus modernity, the community versus the world. In her participatory projects, she has managed to involve many women, giving them a new platform to fight against social injustice.
