Gervasio Sánchez

Gervasio Sánchez (1959, Córdoba, Spain) has spent more than forty years documenting armed conflicts from a perspective close to those who are most affected by them. His work as a photojournalist began in the 1980s, when he published his first reports in the Spanish newspaper El Heraldo de Aragón. Since then, he has worked as a freelancer for different media, such as the BBC, the Spanish radio network Cadena SER and the newspaper La Vanguardia, covering wars in Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe. Besides capturing the shootings, he is interested in what remains, in the consequences of violence, the physical and emotional wounds that take decades to heal, if they ever do. Works like El cerco de Sarajevo (The siege of Sarajevo) or Vidas minadas (Mined lives) reflect the committed approach he has had since the beginning of his career, based on respecting the people he portrays and on constantly criticising impunity
