Denilson Baniwa

Denilson Baniwa

Denilson Baniwa (1984, Darí, Brazil) is an indigenous artist of the Baniwa people who was born in the village of Darí, in Rio Negro (Amazonas). His fits into a tradition of cultural and ecological resistance deeply connected to the struggles of his community in the Amazonia. Using several media, his work addresses the deep traces that colonialism has left on indigenous culture, land and identity. Baniwa is an artist who adopts cultural anthropophagy as his methodology: he appropriates the languages of Western modernity to deconstruct and resignify them, in an act of visual decolonisation that challenges the imposed historical narratives. To him, art is an act of resistance, a means of safeguarding his people's well-being against the multiple threats they may face.
