Vasco Araújo: Libertas - Da condição de pessoa livre

Performance. Running time: 40 min.
Libertas - Da condição de pessoa livre seeks to question the idea of freedom of human beings, who can speak, and the boundaries that constantly exist between societies, classes, groups and individuals. Most of the time, these confrontations result in oppressive spaces and actions of one dominant group over another, where a chain of actions-reactions is developed. This reminds us of the old relationships between men and women, conservatives and liberals, colonisers and colonised, masters and slaves.
There is an open call for all those who wish to participate in this performance, whether or not they live in Pontevedra or the surrounding area. The artist Vasco Araújo (1971, Lisbon, Portugal) invites everyone to join an amateur but organised choir to sing the 'Chorus of the Slaves' from the opera Nabucco, by Giuseppe Verdi. This musical passage is still one of the anthems against oppression since Lombardy (the Italian province of the Austro-Hungarian Empire) aspired to freedom in 1842. The performance is like a protest march where participants make a tour of the town and may, or may not, arrive by boat to any of the exhibition spaces. It is recommended that everyone wears all-white outfits.
