‘The beauty of the sinister, the aesthetics in question’. Norberto Olmedo in conversation with Antón Sobral

In this session, the painter Norberto Olmedo will talk with Antón Sobral about Proyecto Gulag (Gulag project, 2014-2024), a series of portraits reflecting on the fragility of humanity against the totalitarianisms of the 20th century.
Inspired by a trip to Auschwitz in 2014, Olmedo began this project to pay tribute to the victims of Stalinist repression in the USSR and to denounce the mechanisms of violence, silencing and dehumanisation of that regime. Proyecto Gulag brings to mind the forced labour camps of the Soviet system, where millions of people were imprisoned, exploited and exterminated in extreme conditions between 1929 and 1953.
An encounter to think about human dignity, memory and the possibility of imagining a fairer world from the perspective of art.
